A$AP Mob founder A$AP Yams has died aged 26, according to reports from other members of the hip hop collective.
The
official Twitter account for A$AP Mob posted the message RIP @ASAPYAMS
today at 1.14pm and fellow member A$AP Rocky shared a snap of Yams on
his Instagram with the touching caption: "R.I.P YAMS, I LOVE YOU
BROTHER."
Yams, real name Steven Rogriguez grew up in Harlem and
founded the Mob with fellow New Yorkers ASAP Bari and A$AP Illz in 2007.
They met ASAP Rocky in 2008, and by 2011 had signed major label deals.
Yams was one of the first progressive stars to use Tumblr to build
his reputation as an online tastemaker. Speaking to the New York Times
in 2013, he said: "Rocky’s like Luke Skywalker and I’m Yoda."
"We
wanted to become big," he explained in the NYT profile, "but we didn't
want to do it by hopping on somebody else's wave. We wanted to come in
the game with our own wave."
While the exact cause of A$AP Yams’
death is unknown, some suspect drug use may have been involved as he
tweeted about Codeine before his death.
